From summer to autumn on the canal – a continuous flow, in more ways than one!

As summer gently draws to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on another fantastic season along the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal. While this year brought one of the driest summers on record—resulting in water shortages and temporary closures across many waterways in the UK—we are delighted to share that our beloved stretch of canal remained peacefully navigable and open through every single day of the summer heat.
This uninterrupted cruising was made possible thanks to a collaborative agreement between Welsh Water, the Welsh Government and The Canal & River Trust. Together, they arranged for water to be released from the vast Usk Reservoir, situated just north of Brecon. Flowing down the River Usk to Brecon, the water passes through a historic weir and journeys through a mile-long underground pipe beneath Brecon town before entering the canal at Brecon Basin.
It is a wonderful testament to local care and engineering, ensuring our guests could continue to enjoy the canal despite such pressures on water supply throughout the UK.
Now, a magnificent shift is taking place along the towpath. As the crisp autumn air settles into the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) valley, the dense green canopy above the water is beginning its annual transformation into an extraordinary display of gold, amber and deep copper rust.
