We recently rediscovered how a weekend on the Mon Brec canal with Beacon Park Boats, has the magical ability to slow time. The slightly slower than walking pace of cruising along the canal, combined with amazing views round every bend, as well as the hypnotic progress beneath the splendid mature trees, means everyday concerns drift away. Three days seemed like five.

The boats are beautifully built and set up and the team at BPB always cheery and helpful. Restorative and highly recommended.

We’re just back from an amazing week on Merlin. The boat was fitted out to the highest spec . . Lots of thoughtful extras like a hook to hang your body puff on to dry and kitchen towel provided and a cake/biscuit tin . . Few issues but these were sorted out no problem. One of the most impressive element was of our holiday were the staff . . The minute we arrived we were greeted by Tom who had a trolley ready to help us with our luggage, in fact he even loaded it on to the boat for us . . Thank you Tom. We had ordered a grocery delivery which was accepted by the staff and it was all packed neatly away for us . . Fresh flowers and a few yummy treats waiting for us too . . Overall this was without doubt the best Company and narrowboat we have ever had (we have had several over the years) and can recommend to anyone thinking of booking.

Third time on the Mon and Brec and the most comfortable on Coot from Beacon park boats. On electric it was super peaceful. Clean tidy boat with everything you need and more! Helpful staff on arrival. Had a steady week went to Brecon and back calling at pubs along the way for meals. The old rectory, coach and horses, Star Inn,Royal oak and clarance inn Brecon. Lovely boat on a lovely canal.

Another perfect weekend (on Falcon)
We came back for what must be the 10th or 15th time last weekend, and enjoyed a weekend on the mighty Falcon. Since first coming, back in October 2021, we've stayed on at least half of the boats, hired paddleboards, 6 and 8 seater ay boats and attended open days. Beacon Park Boats have an amazing team and never cease to amaze us with their professionalism, courtesy and knowledge of boating, nature and the local area. For anyone reading this and considering booking, stop considering and start booking - you will not regret it! No matter which boat you choose, you'll be amazed at how comfortable and relaxed you can be. These boats are not the typical "floating caravans" other companies offer, they're floating 5-star hotels! We'll be back again, we always are. Thanks Alasdair, and to all of your amazing team.

BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY!!!! Without doubt the BEST experience we have had on a boat, on a Barge EVER. Hands down. We have been a few times with different companies to this canal as well as different places - Beacon Boats is a class above. From start to finish simply EXCELLENT. Communication before arrival perfect. On arrival we were met by smart waistcoated gentleman who assisted us to our boat, carrying our luggage. On the barge we were met by another lovely lady who ensured we were aware of key information. Then we sat on the barge to watch a DVD of further information - this was wonderful. Instead of simply leaving written instructions we were able to watch and absorb at our own pace. Then a pilot took us out of the marina and gave us a clear, yet relaxed, tutorial on how to drive and moor the boat. Once we were happy he jumped off. (Thanks Edward!).
So to the boat itself.... We hired DRAKE. (In some ways I don't want to tell everyone how lovely it is as I perhaps want it all too myself). The newest of the fleet at Brecon this is the definition of luxury barge cruising. The thought that went into the design is flabbergasting. Usually one makes a compromise when boating, not here. Full size wonderful shower, gorgeously comfortable bed, beautiful white bedding, (beds made for you here!), high quality plump pillows. Kitchen with solid granite tops, full size hob and oven, decent fridge. Modern solid wood built cabinets (I suspect at the boatyard by these wood wizards). High quality kitchen ware. Even a crystal cut decanter full of Whisky..... My favourite feature was the blend of artistry and woodwork. Duck carvings sat atop the newel posts of the wood and glass (mini) staircase. The walls, ceiling and floor were tastefully adorned in different finishes of wood striping and panelling. I wish I could hire Alaisdair as an architect for my next project. Talent and flair has clearly met well with an excellent team of craftspeople. The boat was SPOTLESSLY clean inside and out. I ordered my grocery shopping online before arrival and found it all stowed away for me. My family is not of petite proportions and at no point did we feel cramped, only comfortable and happy.
As we pootled around the views of Brecon we were constantly called to from people on the tow path saying how beautiful the Barge was.
The boatyard too stands out from its surroundings in only the most positive ways, as a smart and attractive building that sits well in its location. On the last evening we stopped over night in the marina and use the deck side facilities. Here too, attention to detail and thought for even the smallest places. Fresh piles of soft hand towels in bathrooms - that have not been ignored from a design standpoint. The ceilings were shaped and wood clad to look like the inside of a boat.
As we reluctantly left for home (car full of local apple juice for purchase from the boatyard) Alaisdair remarked that if you are going to do something, do it well. I could not agree more, and will happily report that everyone at Beacon Boats has. My one drawback is that barging any where else will never be as good now. I hope Beacon Boats branch out to other locations. I will be the first to book.

Hi, I am Ricki. I am an 8 year old girl. I was on the Kite at Beacon Park Boats. If you are wondering if your child or children will get bored, trust me they won’t. On the deck we saw a swan nest, mallards, ducklings, a mandarin duck, lambs, and even a kite flew over our boat! There is a tunnel that echoes! The way back is fun as well, but sad because your journey is about to end. There are locks and drawbridges. You can jump off and on the boat onto the path. Thank you and don’t fall in the water!

We spent last week on Wren and I felt I had to write and thank you for your all round excellent service! Despite some quite challenging conditions (Saturday 6 May was very wet indeed, I’m sure you’ll recall, and we were told about the tree down, which thankfully we avoided), all your staff were unerringly cheerful, helpful, friendly and highly professional throughout. The tactfulness with which you all dealt with some very novice, nervous and fairly inept boaters did not go unnoticed either!

The boat was immaculate and we so enjoyed our stay on it. I should also say a special thanks for my birthday bottle of Prosecco which was a lovely touch and quite unexpected.

We hired Owl and it was everything we had hoped for and more. The bed is super comfy and the heating and woodburner kept us cosy. The hot tub was sublime and perfect for resting our aching muscles at the end of a busy day (we were fortunate on the first night to sit there under a star-filled sky). Worth noting you will need to take shower gel, but other toiletries were included. Loved all the little touches. We found that setting our alarm to turn on the heating and then going back to bed for an hour meant we could have a hot shower in the morning. Owl got lots of admiring stares and questions from passers by about where to book. Boats from other companies looked nowhere near as lovely.

If you are new to boating, there is no need to worry. The locks, drawbridges and tunnel were all easier than expected, and a member of BPB will stay aboard until you are confident. As others have commented, the canal is shallow in places, so our wide boat (plus us being novices) meant we tended to ground when trying to avoid canoeists and passing other boats. But mostly it was fine. The best approach is to just relax and accept you may make errors occasionally.

We turned just before Brecon and moored just after bridge 164 where there are benches and fine views. Highly recommend it for a rural spot for the night. The views throughout were spectacular and no photos can really do them justice. Despite there being quite a few boats out for hire, we went for hours without seeing anyone else on the canal. Bliss

All BPB staff were excellent, clearly proud to work for the company and deliver a quality service. A special shout out to the person who jumped aboard to show us the ropes and who prevented us from running into some ducklings, and to the lovely lady who showed us a few of the other boats.

What is super lovely is that there is something about canal boats that make people smile (apart from fishermen...). We lost count of the number of children who waved to us and the many people who said hi. The lock keeper at Brynich was especially cheerful and helpful at 8am and other boaters very all friendly (especially the Falcon crew who helped us with the locks). So, you can't help but spend the day in a good mood.

As we neared the boatyard on our return, a heron stood on a moored boat, watching us pass. We were then kindly shown around Heron, and will be booking that for our next trip.

Just back from a truly wonderful memorable week. Our first time as a family with a dog taking to the canals so we were a little nervous on several levels but we need not have been; everything about our time with Beacon Park Boats was truly five star and we returned after a week feeling thoroughly zen and reconnected with each other.
We found Alasdair Kirkpatrick's company by pure luck as we Googled for canal boat holidays with great boats, but from the start to the finish our (always unreasonably high) expectations were exceeded. The warm welcome from the team, smartly dressed in livery and proffering Prosecco was a wonderful start; our boat - Drake - was completely immaculate, richly appointed and brilliantly equipped and stocked (complete with a plentiful supply of Nespresso pods). The boat was a fabulous place to spend the week, we were absolutely not ready to get off at the end and had all found enough space aboard to be both together and apart through the week, giving everyone a bit of what they wanted. The ability to pause and deposit dog-plus-walker onto the tow path was a new but wonderful boon to our family holiday experiences.
For us the standout feature however was the people at Beacon Park Boats. From Alasdair himself, the ever-present entrepreneur-prioprietor of BPB and clearly "the boss", to the engineers, the dock team, the office... every person we met exuded pride in the company, happiness and positive energy in their work, and a real sense of team spirit and belonging seen so rarely these days. We felt warm and welcomed by everyone, from the first moment to the last. A special mention to two of the team, Sam and Edward, who taught us how to drive the boat and supported us during the trip (in the process getting to know our 11-year-old son very well!) - thanks guys, you'll be remembered and talked about for a long time.
Everything about the trip was memorable and marvellous. We have returned properly rested, and spent the car journey home discussing when we plan to return and which of the buffet of fabulous boats on the menu we might select next time.
Very big thanks to everyone at Beacon Park Boats. We will be back soon.

And then, we boarded Falcon .....oh my word, just beautiful. Superb quality finishes, immaculately clean, the most comfortable beds. The whole boat is just superb - everything you could possibly want / need is there. Lovely little touches - flowers, tissues, coffee pods, tea bags, chocolates I could go on and on.

We did the full trip up the the Brecon Basin and back - lots of locks and bridges but great fun. We are so blessed to live in such a beautiful country - the views are breathtaking. Everyone we met was super friendly - the volunteers at the locks were marvellous - so helpful and informative.

We've never done a narrow boat holiday before and loved it so much , we're already looking at it for next year!

I have been on many canal holidays over the years , but our recent trip on "Kite" from Beacon Park Boats surpassed them all without any question, from the very moment that we arrived and were greeted by lovely staff and a glass of Prosecco, to the moment we arrived back it was a 5 star experience all the way. All at Brecon Park Boats,

Just wanted to say thank you again for another wonderful trip aboard one of your lovely boats.

Our second time with BPB so expectations were even higher and Buzzard did not disappoint! On arrival we were greeted with a wonderful welcome by all the Staff and quickly shown aboard. Really appreciated all the little treats, the lovely fluffy towels and quality bed linen. Once our belongings were safely stowed on the boat we were away very quickly which was much appreciated and meant we could get on with our holiday and relax into the slower pace of canal life. Our Labrador, Jake soon settled into his favourite spot at the stern surveying all that was going by!

The scenery along the Canal is beautiful and so much wildlife to look out for too. Enjoyed our morning coffees using the machine provided onboard, so much so have now bought one for using at home! We slept well each night in the super comfy bed and cooking in the well equipped kitchen was never an issue.

All too soon it was time to return to Llangattock, but once again the welcome we received by your Staff and a lovely catch up chat with Alastair was much appreciated.

Thank you for all that you did to ensure we had such a lovely trip.

Kestrel was our boat and Apr 23-26 was our magical time board her. Wider boat than we have enjoyed before, but beautifully kitted out. The attention to detail and care this company put into the whole experience is to be applauded. They really are the benchmark for any hire.
The canal delivered in every way. It’s not a wide canal like many others, but you only travel at 2mph, so easy to navigate. No pubs or dining off boat, but who cares when you have such wonderful views and interesting places to find out about due to the history of the canal. No locks this time, just a chance to recharge the batteries.
Thank you Beacon Park Team. We will return one day soon.

Thanks too Alasdair for letting me have a copy of your book on the 200 years of the canal. I find the industrial history of this part of the world fascinating and Sara and I really enjoyed climbing up onto the Llangattock Escarpment to find reminders of a very different past. The combination of history and nature is a powerful attraction and made it difficult to decide whether to take the boat further or to spend more time walking. Perhaps staying in one of your cottages next time would be the perfect compromise

It is designed for 2 people & really caters for that special time with just the two of you together on the canal. The lighting is amazing & any mood is catered for, controlled either from the sitting area or the large bed & ditto to the locations of the USB sockets & the double shower is a very special treat & beats anything we have found in a hotel. With the log effect burner, cosy nights in together are as appealing as the delights of being out in the fresh air, ambling along the canal in this beautiful boat. The airiness, pristine cleanliness, delightful decor & beautiful scenery make this the perfect boat for honeymooners, newly married or oldies like us, married for 47 years. We cannot recommend Wren, Beacon Park Boats & their staff enough. Thank you all for another fabulous holiday.

Having grown up in Llanfoist and spent a childhood in the 1970's playing along these canal banks I had never actually been on a barge! So now in my 50's my husband and I booked a 3 night weekend barge, Harrier, in July 2019. We were a little apprehensive as to handling the vessel but were sent an initial DVD to watch and given a personalised tutorial before we embarked.
The barge was immaculate, comfortable and stylishly fitted out. We were totally immersed for the whole time in navigating the route, learning to manage the locks ( we headed north) ,soaking up the views and revelling in the peace. A perfect antidote to busy lives. We were fortunate with the weather but I think would still have enjoyed in the rain.In a weekend it was possible for us to reach Brecon and back although turning the barge with a crowd of onlookers Brecon was a tad stressful!
I can't recommend this company more highly for attention to detail in the barges. I have already passed on the brochure to friends and we ourselves hope to try a whole week next time and next time head south.

We spent one week on Heron - our first time on a narrowboat - and loved every minute of it. The boats are beautifully designed with all the amenities you need, put together very thoughtfully with a high degree of craft - homely and modern at the same time. The BPB team are friendly and supportive, especially to first timers. They send out all the information you need in advance and spend time in the handover making sure you know how the boat works. Of course, knowing how something works and actually working it are two different things. The first hour was 'an experience' - but once you got the feel of the vessel then you could really relax into it. Yes, you ground it a fair few times, and occasionally get the angle going into a bridge wrong - but since you're travelling slower than walking speed then nothing can go particularly wrong. To be honest I wish we'd taken a two week break with the Heron. The first day you learn how to work it, and the locks. The second day you build up your helming confidence - then the rest of the time you totally disengage from the speed of working life and relax. Wonderful experience, brilliantly well designed boat, fabulous service.

Just finishing a fantastic weeks hols with friends going up & down the Mon & Brec canal. Arrived last Sat to meet Lisa,who inducted us on the barge. She was very nice & very knowledgable. We have had a great week & we’ve been very lucky with the weather. Plenty of pubs to choose from & everybody we’ve met has been very friendly.

Just returned after a great week away with Buzzard. The weather was interesting to say the least with all four seasons in one day !!!
What a great company, from start to finish a truly professional approach, booking was easy and informative price is what you pay no hidden extras. The boat was well maintained and was very well specified with coffee machine , Wi-Fi , tv , DAB radio just to name a few of the items, a luxury boat with everything thought off. Look at the other boats on the mon and brec and then see these guys there is no comparison. Keep up the good work. And thanks for helping dragging one of my dogs from his unplanned dip when we came back!

I just wanted to say a big thank you from Graham and I for a wonderful holiday last week on Hobby. Considering the weather wasn't so great, we still had a really wonderful holiday which nothing could have dampened. Of course the canal is an obvious treasure but the quality of the boat and the experience of your business were a major contribution. I left it rather late for me before booking and with the choice of quite a few hire companies, I wasn't entirely sure what I was going to get. But I have no doubt we made the best choice and Graham has almost accepted that I don't recall paying a huge premium for the high quality we got.

I just put on entry on the Mon & Brec Canal pages on Tripadvisor plugging the canal, the local business and producers down in Abergavenny and of course, Beacon Park Boats.

Dear Sarah and Alistair,

Sorry, it has taken so long before I sat down to write you a thank you letter.

We, my husband Hans and our friends Gunnel and Lars and myself, couldn't have wished more for a perfect holiday than the week we spent on Puffin. From the very first day when we arrived and coffee and cakes were awaiting us, to the last day when we were greeted back as long lost friends.

The introduction was perfect, both of you making sure that we felt happy about everything before letting us set off on our own and making ourselves at home on Puffin.
We were immensly impressed by the extremely high standard on board. Every little detail was thought of.
The gift of the bottle of juice, the jar of jam and the Welsh cakes left on the table warmed our hearts not to mention the vases of fresh flowers. There are not enough words, or supperaltives as Hans said, to describe our feelings about Puffin: we slept like logs in the comfortable beds, enjoyed the hot showers and the fluffy towels. Everything in the kitchen that we could dream of we found and the central heating that warmed us on rainy days.

Your 5-star award is not enough, it should be 10-stars, at least!
We brought home a few of your brochures and they disappeared quickly among our friends so you may have an invasion of Swedes in the future.

Once again, thank you a thousands times and Sarah, thank you very much for kindly taking us to the train station in Abergavenny.

Thank you very much for a wonderful holiday. This is our first proper holiday as a family and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Coming from Hong Kong it is so wonderful to have the quiet surroundings of the beautiful countryside and the open space. Our 8 month year old baby daughter also really enjoyed the fresh air and nature. It was very easy to have her with us the whole time, and I will definitely recommend this great holiday to our friends as well.

We just wanted to thank you both again for such a fantastic holiday last week on Eagle.

We really were blown away by the extremely high standard of the boat and the care you had all taken in its presentation. I have been doing canal boat holidays for many years including a fair few on my family’s own narrowboat and I have never seen such high standards as those reached by your boats. Even after watching your crews poring all over the boats after our return, I can’t understand how you get your fleet so immaculately clean and prepared so quickly for the next batch of customers. Touches like the complementary local Welsh cakes, flower vase and apple juice really finished things off. In addition, I cannot remember ever receiving anywhere near the warm, friendly welcome and truly comprehensive overview, to say nothing of the equally warm send-off we received from you all. Your beautiful boatyard has also clearly been constructed with real care and thought and it only further enhanced our overall holiday experience. The design and construction of our boat brought a number of admiring comments and queries as we went along.

You have all clearly put huge amounts of effort in respect of so many things big and small and as a result your business stands head and shoulders above all others I have seen on the canals. With all of this, even the few days of cold rain were a pleasure.

We will certainly be back, and I will tell all who will listen about our experiences. In the meantime we wish you all the very best for the future and hope that you reap all of the successes that you so richly deserve.
