Family holidays

A holiday on the Mon & Brec canal promises to be an adventure that suits a family of all ages, because there’s plenty to see and do, both on and off the water. Children usually have more freedom than they do at home and four-legged friends will relish the outdoor life.

If you're on one of our narrowboats, you spend the day cruising through beautiful scenery with all your home comforts around you, and explore a new destination each day. Adults get the opportunity to ‘captain’ the boat, and everyone can join in with mooring, casting off and going through locks. It’s a great way of keeping all family members happy.

If you're staying in a cottage at Llanfoist Wharf, you get to watch the boats passing and the wildlife enjoying the canal, from your very own vantage point. Take a short drive and you can explore the castles, churches, craft centres and vineyards in the area. Reach the capital city of Cardiff by car or train (from Abergavenny) in around 45 minutes, while some of Wales' best beaches are just a little further away.

Narrowboats

If you're on one of our narrowboats, you spend the day cruising through beautiful scenery with all your home comforts around you, and explore a new destination each day. Adults get the opportunity to ‘captain’ the boat, and everyone can join in with mooring, casting off, operating lift bridges and going through locks. It’s a great way of keeping all family members!

With one of the longest lock-free stretches of waterway in Britain (25 miles from the southern terminus of the canal), the Mon and Brec offers canal holidays that need not be strenuous. You can spend a week on one of our boats without having to operate a single lock. In fact, in its entire length of 36 miles the canal has only 6 locks.

You’ll find our boats are very spacious, some have private cabins for complete privacy, and some rear bedrooms can sleep up to three children.
