'Sunshine Saturday' should be renamed 'Staycation Saturday'

The first Saturday in January is known as ‘sunshine Saturday’ in the travel industry when families book their foreign beach holidays, but that trend may be turning.

With last year being the hottest on record in the UK and 2023 set to follow, staying at home by water may make canal staycations the order of the day.

Certainly, if the evidence of Beacon Park Boats’ New Year Sale is anything to go by:

• people want to holiday at home

• in luxury accommodation close to the water

• without worries about the exchange rate

• with an all-inclusive price with no hidden extras

• and with a better-than-average chance of sunny weather

• may be wanting to cut carbon emissions by not flying and holidaying instead on electric or hybrid boats

Beacon Park Boats’ owner, Alasdair Kirkpatrick, said: “Our January 2nd sale saw record bookings for a single day of people wanting to holiday in the Brecon Beacons; we look forward to greeting them this summer.”

“We offer 5-star luxury holidays with no hidden costs, with all linen and towels included, a full tank of diesel and the most beautiful canal in the UK, the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.  We have one fully-electric boat and are building our second hybrid boat, so people can holiday with a clear conscience compared to flying. And the joy of the Mon and Brec is because trees line it; it’s always possible to find some shade, even if this summer is a scorcher,” he said.

In its long-range forecast, the Met Office says global weather trends mean temperatures in 2023 are “likely to be warmer than 2022”. Alasdair said: "On the evidence of what we are seeing, Sunshine Saturday should be renamed Staycation Saturday.  Book now before we book out.”
