Christmas lights and starry nights with Beacon Park Boats

Canal boat under starry skiesThe idea of dreamy starry nights and wide-open skies might seem so far away right now, in a world of lockdowns and restrictions and keeping two meters apart. But what if there was a way you could see the stars from the comfort of your own floating holiday home, safe, secure and snug for the night? And what if you bring your family Christmas celebrations with you, too?

On a clear night in the Brecon Beacons, you can see the Milky Way, some of the major constellations, bright nebulas, and even a meteor shower or two. And a luxury Beacon Park Canal Boat makes the ideal viewing platform.

The Brecon Beacons have the highest quality dark skies in the whole of the UK, making it the perfect destination for stargazers. The area became the fifth International Dark Skies Reserve in the World in 2012. Across the globe, there are only 16 reserves now, ranging from Wales to France, Canada, Africa and Australia. All are described by the International Dark Skies Reserve Programme as “possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural, heritage, and/or public enjoyment.”

There are few better ways to enjoy this natural wonder than on one of our luxury canal boats. Winter is the best time to stargaze; because the skies are at their most clear.

You can cruise to a sheltered spot on the canal, well away from any light sources, but still have warmth and a cosy bed immediately on hand once your stargazing is done. Some of our canal boats have gas effect stoves or log burners to aid the festive feel.  Presents under a tree by a canal boat stove

For the first time ever, we are opening our narrow boats for Christmas and New Year.

We have boats big enough to accommodate large families, and booking more than one boat means you can bring your bubble to Wales. We will provide all the decorations, crackers and a bottle of fizz to get the celebrations underway. All you need to bring is food. There are two butchers in Crickhowell, selling local produce and the supermarkets will deliver to the boathouse as well. All of our boats have well-equipped kitchens with ovens large enough for a turkey dinner, if that is your choice.

So, why don’t you bring your family or friends with you and celebrate the festive season with Christmas lights and starry nights in the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park.
