5 things to do for Father's Day

Looking for something to do on Father's Day? Or searching for an interesting gift? Why not consider something a bit different this year? A day out on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal is an exciting alternative to the usual family get together.

1. Go for a family walk along the towpath
Young and old enjoy a gentle saunter together along the flat canal towpath. Children may like to ride their bikes, and the dog will be delighted!

2. Find a pleasant picnic spot
Pack Dad's favourite food and drink, and set off to find a picnic spot along the towpath. There are wooden benches at several lovely locations including Goytre Wharf and Llangynidr locks, and endless places to put down your picnic rug and enjoy the view.

3. Enjoy a pub lunch
This waterway is dotted with pubs along its entire length, offering a range of food from traditional Sunday roasts to curries. And lunch always tastes better after a walk in the fresh air!

4. Cruise or paddle along the canal
Hire an electric boat or a Canadian canoe from the end of the canal at Brecon. They can be hired for as little as one hour or for the whole day, and advance booking is recommended. Gift vouchers are also available for this activity - call 01873 858277.

5. Go fishing
Perhaps what your Dad likes best is some peace and quiet all to himself!

If you can't make it to the canal for Father's Day, bring the canal to your Dad. Our illustrated book "200 years of The Monmouthshire and the Brecknock & Abergavenny Canals" is a relaxing read.
